He wore starched white shirts buttoned at the neckAnd he'd sit in the shade and watch the chickens peckAnd his teeth were gone, but what the heckI thought that he walked on waterSaid he was a cowboy when he was youngHe could handle a rope and he was good with a gunAnd my mama's daddy was his oldest sonAnd I thought that he walked on waterAnd if the story was told, only heaven knowsBut his hat seemed to me like an old haloAnd though his wings, they were never seenI thought that he walked on waterWell, he tied a cord to the end of a mopAnd said, "Son, here's a pony, keep her at a trot"And I'd ride in circles while he laughed a lotThen I'd flop down beside himAnd he was ninety years old in '63And I loved him and he loved meAnd Lord, I cried the day he died'Cause I thought that he walked on waterBut if the story was told, only heaven knowsBut his hat seemed to me like an old haloAnd though his wings, they were never seenI thought that he walked on waterYeah, I thought that he walked on water
