Mama always prayed that I'd be a better man than DaddyAnd I determined not to let her downDeserted by the man she lovedAnd left to raise four childrenWe were the local gossip of the townI promised her that I'd live rightAnd not be like the othersBut I wound up in jail on Christmas DayI told her I'd be home and not to worry 'bout my brothersWhen I got home my Mom had passed awayCHORUS:And I hear tell the road to hellIs paved with good intentionsBut Mama my intentions were the bestThere's lots of things in my lifeI'd just as soon not to mentionLooks like I turned out like all the restBut Mama my intentions were the bestA little boy with big blue eyesA-beggin' to go fishin'I promised him but never took the timeNow they won't let me see himAnd I sit here a-wishin'Wishin' I could hold him one more timeCHORUS:And I hear tell the road to hellIs paved with good intentionsBut Mama my intentions were the bestThere's lots of things in my lifeI'd just as soon not to mentionLooks like I turned out like all the restBut Mama my intentions were the bestBut Mama my intentions were the best
