Living on the road, my friend, was gonna keep you free and cleanNow, you wear your skin like ironAnd your breath's as hard as keroseneYou weren't your mama's only boy, but her favorite one, it seemsShe began to cry when you said goodbye and sank into your dreamsPoncho was a bandit boy, his horse was fast as polished steelHe wore his gun outside his pants for all the honest world to feelPoncho met his match, you know, on the deserts down in MexicoNobody heard his dyin' wordsAh, but that's the way it goesAll the Federales say, they could've had him any dayThey only let him slip away, out of kindness, I supposeLefty, he can't sing the blues all night long, like he used toThe dust that Poncho bit down south, ended up in Lefty's mouthDay they laid poor Poncho low, Lefty split for OhioWhere he got the bread, to go, ain't nobody knowsAll the Federales say, they could've had him any dayWe only let him slip away, out of kindness, I supposeThe poets tell how Poncho fell and Lefty's living in a cheap hotelThe desert's quiet and Cleveland's coldAnd so the story ends, we're toldPoncho needs your prayers, it's true, but save a few for Lefty tooHe only did what he had to do and now he's growing old(All the Federales say, we could've had him any day)We only let him go so long, out of kindness, I supposeA few great Federales say, we could've had him any dayWe only let him go so long, out of kindness I suppose
