Thanks for listening to Big Machine Radio, I'm BeccaAnd when I first heard that Lady AWas gonna be part of the BMLG familyI was so excited because I have loved them for so longAnd now we have this brand new album, OceanThat we're talking to Charles, Hillary, and Dave all aboutAnd before we get to the next song, which ughI can't wait to talk about itBut I wanna ask you, working with Dan HuffHe's a brand new producer for you guysHe's obviously a musical geniusI mean his credits in producing are just too long to even get intoBut how was it for you guys to hear your soundAnd maybe approach your music from a fresh perspectiveAnd with a new set of earsAnd someone different kind of steering the ship on this album?I think if you would have asked us together individuallyWho we've wanted to work with in the studioAnd just haven't had the opportunity to over the course of our careerWe would all say Dan HuffHe has just been the captain of so many albumsThat I think are some of our most favoriteBiggest influences over the yearsI remember Dave and I, before we even met youWhen we first moved to NashvilleWe were geeking out on the production of Keith Urban's recordsAnd the Rascal Flatts recordsI mean we would sit there and just pick apartHow amazing different parts of those records wereAnd so we had kind of dreamed of working with him for a long timeAnd it is kind of funny how it's kind of full circleYeah, and you know it's like when you meet someone you consider a heroLike I'll never forget the time that we met Bruce SpringsteenWe were in London and it was likeYou have these hopes that they're gonnaBe as cool as you just hope they areAnd when they are, you're just so blown awayAnd you're so excited and humbled and gratefulThat they surpassed what your expectations wereAnd I would say the same exact thing about DanI actually was thinking about this recentlyLike I don't know what was my favorite part of recordingActually doing that or the conversations thatI was able to have with him in the processOf just he brings his entire being to the studioHis heart, his musicianship, his experienceAnd we got to see all of itAnd I just appreciate him leaving it all out on the table for usAnd I think just the birth of a beautiful friendship with him tooJust so much deeper than just cutting songs and singing themAnd he opened up his home to us to record almost all of the vocalsWhich for me specifically I feel like I accessed something vocallyThat I'd never been able to before because I felt so comfortable thereYeah, well and he makes good coffeeGreat coffeeYou would come down the stairs some afternoonsAnd his little grandson would be thereAnd it just, the family aspect of it just was so beautifulAnd so it far exceeded what I ever could have dreamed working with himYeah, that producer role is really a part of the familyI mean he was the person we spent six months with non-stopI mean he was the fourth member of theBand for half a year working on this albumSo that's a special role to be that closeAnd like Hillary said he was totally a part of our familyAnd it was a wonderful fitHe was very patientAnd you know that is why if you look atA lot of credits on today's country musicYou'll see Dan Huff's name all over the place as a producerBecause he does such incredible workAnd I want to talk about this next songEarlier I mentioned that some of the production sounded very sparseAnd really highlighted your harmonies and your voiceAnd I think this is a prime exampleThe song's called "What I'm Leaving For"And I don't even have to ask why you recorded itBecause when people hear the lyrics they're gonna know exactly whyBut tell me when you heard this song for the first timeIt hit me so hard, I don't even have kidsAnd I just sort of ached for you guysSo I mean did you get emotional the first time you heard itOr what was it like to try and record this song?It was funny with "What I'm Leaving For"There were two songs on this record thatHillary had to kind of stop mid-vocalAnd walk out of the room, she was crying so muchAnd "What I'm Leaving For" was one of them and "Ocean" is the otherAnd we got so many songs that got sent to usWe wrote so much for this recordAnd our rule is always if there's a song that comes inThat beats something that we've written, we're gonna record itAnd Dave and Hillary really both were so passionate about this songAnd I remember you said before you went inYou were like I don't know if I'm gonna beAble to sing this song and get through itBut you did and it's one of my favoritesIt's so relatable, I mean it is our storyIt is, and for me I grew up in a musical householdBoth my parents traveled in a touring band with RebaAnd so I was that kid that I'm singing aboutAnd now I'm that momAnd so having both perspectives was really powerfulI mean I bawled my eyes out the first time I heard itAnd just felt like I remember texting orEmailing Charles and Dave and our teamAnd being like I've just gotta go crawl in a ballAnd like have a good cry about thisJust because I have so many memories flooding back of my childhoodAnd then I also have so many memories and present momentsOf where I am in my life now, where we are in our lives nowWith walking out of our house to go do what we loveWhat we feel called to doBut leaving our children and our spouses back homeAnd they come with us a lotBut I've said that exact thingLike I feel like I'm being pulled byBoth my arms and I'm a perforated pageThat's how it will always beThe pull of parenthood and the pull of a calling and a dreamThat we're so blessed to be able to chase and do and call our careerSo it's very, very right on the surface and rawAnd I think about other familiesLike moms coming back from maternity leaveI think about my best friend whose husband's in the NavyAnd deploys for months at a timeI mean you can really think about any walk of life, any jobThe pull of parenthoodIt's hard for anybody to leave their houseEven if you leave in the morning at eight and come home at fiveIt's hard to leave them when they're your worldThey're your responsibilityBut wanting them to understand because we have childrenTo raise them up to be good humansThat this is a part of life and to chase a dreamAnd to communicate your why in doing itAnd want them to find the same thingWell the song is incredible, we're about to play itBut I also want to encourage peopleIf you've not seen the video for "What I'm Leaving For"Ugh, it's just preciousIt features all six kids from the members of Lady ACharles has one, Hillary three, and Dave twoAnd they are the stars of this videoAnd it's so perfect for what you're gonna hear in this songAnd you will find "What I'm Leaving For" on OceanThe new album from Lady A
