You're listening to the Lady A Ocean album release special, and ifYou've heard Lady A talking about this album leading up to itsRelease, they've talked about the fact that it is the most personalThe most vulnerable, and it kinda gets back to some of the earlySound, and Charles, the next song we're gonna talk about is "Be Patient With My Love," and talk about havingTo really bare your soul. How did you get to thePlace where you were ready to write this song?"Be Patient With My Love" is hands down the most personalKind of brutally honest song I've ever written. It wasRight around, I think right around when you were havingYour twins and Dave was having your daughter and, uh-It was November. I'll never forget 'cause it wasNovember. I listened to it like twenty times inA row when you sent it. It was November of '17I was kinda right in the middle of a bit of a internal struggle aboutWhat I wanted out of this life. It almost felt like a mini littleMidlife crisis where I was like, "I'm bored. We've accomplished soMuch as a band. What do I want to do?" You know, and this and thatI just was having this little internal struggle, and it's interestingHow foreshadowing that song ended up being 'cause I did kind of endUp hitting a mini little rock bottom there after I wrote the songBut it was the second song I wrote that day with Dave Barnes andBen West, and the first song we wrote was kind of a fun, silly songYou know, and we wrote it really fast, and I didn't have anywhereTo go, and I was like, "That song's not gonna do anything," and ISaid, "You know, we still got a couple hours. Let's just play around" And, uh, Dave Barnes was just strumming like one or two chordsAnd I just immediately said, "I might have done it this time, mightHave drank too much wine, might have said somethin' that I can'tTake back," which is usually what happens after too much drinkingLike, end up sayin' somethin', and you're like, "Wow, that just cameOut of my mouth," and so it just kinda went from there, and, uhIt was just a really honest song about, "I know I got this, but youGotta be a little bit patient with me findin' this." I was also atA time in my life, too, where I was really strugglin' with mySpirituality, like, "What is it all about?" So then, you knowShortly after that, it was funny. I really kinda went through thisWhole epiphany and awareness and spiritual awareness, and so it'sInteresting now. The song means so much more now to me than it did atThe time 'cause I think at the time I was, I don't know, I didn'tReally feel it as much. I just kinda knew it soundedBrutally honest, but I wasn't really at this point in myLife where I was wantin' to change. So yeah, it's definitelyA really honest song and probably the first song reallyThat we knew we were gonna cut off this record, right?Yeah, the anchor song for this albumWell, I think it set the tone, too, about let's just be really honestWithin the songs we pick and with all of it. Let's not just throwA song on there because it sounds like a hit. Let's throw a song onThere because it hits us, and I think overall the records we've madeWe've found that the audience responds so much more. They can tellThey can hear it in your voice when you're authentic, and you knowA song like "Ocean," I mean, I just knew the minute Hillary startedSinging, I said, "People are gonna flip out over this because it'sSo honest, and it's so real, and you can hear it in her voice,"And so we're really tryin' to do more of that and get back to thatI think we all live in a world- I think it's human nature, and thenI also think that just the way that our culture is now, we have toProject this like we've got it together when I think all of us areSitting here going, "I don't really have it all together," and ifSomebody has the guts and the vulnerability and the bravery to sayIt, oh my gosh, I'm gonna be like, "Me too." It's like empathyTrue empathy, and seeing one another in their most authentic placesAnd a lot of that is really hard, and it's really vulnerableAnd it's not the easy thing to do, but what I think with "Be PatientWith My Love" and songs like "Ocean," it starts a conversationI think it frees people in what they're struggling with and feelingLike, "I'm not the only one. Thank God I'm not the only one,"Because in this world where we are so over-inundated withCommunication and talking to people and constant text threads, andWe never put our phone down, we all feel alone, and then it takesThe power of music and this- and a lyric and a beautiful melody toKind of break through and go, "That is reallyHow I feel, and thank God I'm not the only one" And that's what a lot of this record is aboutIt's interesting 'cause you know what I'm learning? The more thatI am willing to be honest and be vulnerable with my own feelingsJust in my own life, not, you know, I don't write songs andPut it out to the world, but maybe I am feeling depressed orI'm feeling anxious or overwhelmed, and I share that with someoneAnd a lot of times, they will reveal that they are feeling aLot of the same things, and so it's amazing what will come ofIt and how people will relate to those emotions a lot of timesI feel like that's kind of our job as artists, songwritersPerformers. I mean, we're tellin' that story and hopin' thatPeople identify with that, and when that connection happensWhen somebody doesn't feel so alone in that moment, I meanThere's so much courage in Charles's writing of that song, of "Be Patient With My Love," and a lot of courage and vulnerability to-To perform it, and that's a story that a lot of people can identifyWith, so yeah, for us as artists, we feel a calling to be ableTo say that, be vulnerable, and let that resonate with peopleI believe that this song is going to resonate with a lot ofPeople. I remember the first time you guys played this forUs. We were in a group with a- a few other reporters, andA couple of 'em actually started crying listening to the songIt's powerful. It's called "Be Patient With My Love." GetIt today on Lady A's album Ocean, which is available now
