This song was written by our friend, Keith GattisAn amazing songwriter, singer, and guitar slingerWe lost Keith way too soonHe wrote this song with another Texas legend, Guy ClarkKeith, we miss you, brotherBut I know we're gonna see you again somedayHe worse a sweat-stained open road Stetson hatA domino king from way on backJack of all trades with an old johnboatAnd he spent his last days just makin' it floatAnd every now and then, he'd pick me upWhen he knew the water wouldn't be too roughHe was known for never sayin' too muchWe'd get in that boat and he'd open right upHe said, "The war took my brotherThe good Lord took my motherAnd the years, well, I don't know where they all wentUntil that roll is called up yonderAll I can do is wonderIf I even did enough to make a dentBut I made a few good friendsAnd I always paid my rent"Sometimes we'd just sit and laughAbout girls and dogs and friends we hadHe said the good'ns are the hardest to come byAnd I'd get him to tell me 'bout the days gone byHe'd bait his hook, wipe his browStart resurrectin' ups and downsWe'd drift offshore while the daylight burnedAnd I'd hang on to every wordHe said, "I've done my share of livin'Found a woman who was willin'And through the years, I learned how to bendUntil that roll is called up youngerI can't help but wonderIf I even did enough to make a dentBut I made a few good friendsAnd I always paid my rent"Lat time I saw him, he was movin' slowSaid, "I ain't got much farther to goBut I'd like you to have this boatTake her out and make her floatI can't tell you how to live your lifeBut if you find a good girl, hold on tightTreat her good and pay your billsYour friends will help you climb the hills"He said, "That road is long and windin'And when I look behind meBut I'd like to think that it was time well spentUntil that roll is called up yonderI can't help but wonderIf I even did enough to make a dentBut I made a few good friendsAnd I always paid my rent"He worse a sweat-stained open road Stetson hatA domino king from way on backJack of all trades with an old johnboatAnd he spent his last days just makin' it floatMm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm
